I-10 East was closed twice this past Saturday morning due to two accidents. The first closure occurred when a two-car rollover collision left five people injured. The accident occurred at 3:45 am on Saturday at Sjolander Road in Baytown. The accident is reported to have put two women in critical condition, and involved at least one of the vehicles rolling over onto its roof. They were both transported by helicopter to a local hospital.
A Fatal Accident Within 8 Hours
The second accident was also severe and life-altering. Only a few minutes after the first scene was cleared and the lanes were reopened, another accident occurred a few roads west of Sjolander Road, at John Martin Road. It is being reported that at 10:10 am, a 26-year-old Alabama man drove his 18-wheeler into a pickup truck shortly after traffic resumed. The impact pushed the pickup into a second 18-wheeler directly in front of it, crushing the two pickup truck passengers.
The passengers in the pickup truck and the young driver of the 18-wheeler were all injured in the impact—the driver of the pickup fatally so. He was a 67-year-old man from the Woodlands; we’re sad to report that he was declared dead at the scene. His passenger, a 39-year-old man from Spring, was severely injured and taken to the hospital by helicopter.
I-10 was eventually reopened by 4:40 pm, marking over 12 hours of closure since the first accident occurred. While the driver of the truck was reported in stable condition, the condition of his 39-year-old victim has not been revealed.
