The southbound lanes of Highway 59 in Northeast Houston were shut down for a few hours on Sunday afternoon after a three car accident—including an 18-wheeler—left eight people seriously injured. According to media reports, the accident occurred when a Chevy Trailblazer broke down in traffic and was unable to pull off of the highway. A Ford F-150 was stopped behind the Trailblazer when an 18-wheeler slammed into the back of the F-150. The force of the collision thrust the F-150 into the Trailblazer, which nearly rolled off of the highway and into the San Jacinto River.

Emergency responders arrived to the scene and were able to rescue all five passengers inside the Trailblazer. They were transported to the hospital, but said to be in stable condition. Two of the three passengers inside the F-150 were flown to a nearby hospital by a helicopter. They are said to be in critical condition. The driver of the 18-wheeler escaped the accident with only minor injuries.
