An accident involving a passenger van and a Metro Bus in Northeast Houston this afternoon sent ten people to the hospital for treatment. The accident occurred at the intersection of Crosstimbers and Hirsch. The impact of the collision was so forceful that the Metro bus ended up in a field near the intersection.
Thirteen people were riding the bus at the time of the accident. The ten that were transported to the hospital were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the van may have suffered a broken ankle in the collision, according to an official from the Houston Fire Department.
More Commercial Vehicle Accidents in Houston
The bus accident is the latest of a rising number of accidents in Houston involving commercial vehicles. Just hours before the bus accident, an 18-wheeler veered off of the interstate and crashed into a mechanic shop along the freeway. The driver of the big rig was rushed to the hospital, but no other injuries were reported.
The most recent statistics from the Department of Transportation show that in 2013 there were 4,274 accidents in Harris County that involved commercial vehicles. 1,240 of those resulted in injuries and 25 proved fatal. In October of last year, Texas officials were asked to prepare a plan to address the rising number of fatal truck accidents across the state.
