A fatal truck accident near the Sam Houston Tollway temporarily shut down portions of Highway 225 in southeast Houston on Monday morning. The wreck occurred around 9 a.m. when an 18-wheeler collided with a car on the westbound La Porte Freeway. One of the passengers in the car died in the collision and the other passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle. The extent of the second passenger's injuries is not known. There were no reported injuries to the driver of the semi-truck and the cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Fatal truck accidents such as this are becoming increasingly common in Houston and the entire state of Texas. Over the last 5 years, Texas has seen a 51% increase in the number of truck accidents that resulted in 1 or more fatalities. Some of the increase can be attributed to the oil and gas boom that the state has experienced recently. New drilling sites in south Texas and increased production from the refineries in southeast Houston have brought more 18-wheelers on the roads with other motorists.
