Late Wednesday night, an accident involving two 18-wheelers and three passenger vehicles at the Asher Turnaround on Interstate 10 just east of Beaumont, Texas resulted in four fatalities. Two children and a 62-year-old woman in a 2011 Kia were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of another passenger vehicle involved in the accident was also killed.
Authorities noted that due to the number of vehicles involved, it could take days to determine the cause of the accident and what factors may have contributed to it. State Trooper Stephanie Davis said that the accident occurred in dry conditions, but could not comment on visibility or other details. The stretch of I-10 is currently undergoing construction.
The accident occurred on the heels of the Texas Transportation Commission asking state officials to address the rising number of fatal truck accidents that have plagued Texas highways. Since 2009, Texas has seen a 51% increase in fatal accidents involving commercial trucks. Much of the increase has been attributed to the influx of commercial trucks hauling materials to and from oil in gas drilling sites in rural areas of the state.
