An assistant girls’ track coach from east Texas died last night in a collision with a semitrailer. The collision took place around 10:30 pm on Highway 271 in Titus County. The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that the semitrailer was traveling north on 271 while a Mount Pleasant Independent School District was coming from the other direction.
The bus was followed by a passenger vehicle that was being driven by the girls’ track coach, a young woman whose name we won’t publish here for privacy’s sake. When the semi traveled onto the southbound lane, it struck both the school bus and the passenger vehicle. Both the semi driver and the driver of the passenger car were killed in the crash.
The school bus’ driver, another coach from Mount Pleasant High School, was listed in critical condition. Up to 19 students from the bus (out of 30 total) were taken to 3 area hospitals. According to initial reports from the DPS, 4 passengers were seriously injured while the other 15 had minor or non-life threatening injuries.
