Around 10:15 a.m. on Friday in El Paso, a truck hauling steel railroad tracks drove off the eastbound lane of Interstate 10 and through several parking lots before colliding with Studio 6 Hotel's first floor.
A 52-year-old man who was inside his hotel room at the time of the accident was killed. The victim's name has not been released; however, it has been reported that he worked for TowerComm out of Raleigh, NC. TowerComm, which is a company that installs and services wireless towers, confirmed that its crew was staying at the hotel.
The truck driver has not yet been identified. He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Las Palmas Medical Center for treatment. It has been reported that the big rig exited the freeway onto the 6100 block of South Desert Boulevard. Police stated that they are unsure about what caused the truck to veer off the freeway.
One portion of the road was closed as an investigation began.
Studio 6 was closed for approximately 8 hours while city inspectors looked into whether the building was still structurally sound. Guests in surrounding rooms were moved.
