The financial publication 24/7 Wall St. has named the Dodge Ram pickup truck the most dangerous car in America. The title was awarded as part of a list of the worst cars on the road, based on test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Consumer Reports, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration and JD Power and Associates, a consumer analysis group.
The Dodge Ram 1500 has a safety track record that "has long been unimpressive," the publication noted. The car initially received failing grades in frontal offset crash tests, and was poor at protecting heads and left legs in the event of an accident. Since 2001, the Ram's front offset ratings have improved, but the truck's side impact and rollover ratings still remain below standard. Despite the sub-par safety results, Dodge still sold more than 100,000 trucks each year between 2007 and 2011.
Rounding out the list of top seven most dangerous cars in the U.S. were:
- Dodge Ram
- Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab
- Mazda CX-7
- Mazda CX-9
- Nissan Pathfinder
- Jeep Wrangler
- Suzuki SX4
